Biography

Andy Ozment is an American citizen whose youth was spent first in Salinas, California and later in Huntsville, Alabama. He received a B.S. in Computer Science from Georgia Tech in December, 2000; he also earned certificates in history, business Spanish, and music. During the course of that degree, Andy worked as a software engineer co-op for Nortel Networks and studied abroad in Spain and the UK.

After receiving his undergraduate degree, Andy worked for the Georgia Tech College of Computing, where his responsibilities were divided: he worked on operational system and network security for Computing and Network Services and researched information security policy issues for the Georgia Tech Information Security Center.

In the fall of 2001, Andy was awarded a Marshall Scholarship for study in the United Kingdom. He moved to London for the 2002-2003 academic year and pursued his interest in international policy by earning an M.Sc. in International Relations from the London School of Economics.

Andy began his doctoral degree at the University of Cambridge in 2003 and will finish in October, 2007. While at Cambridge, Andy has worked on the interaction between economics and information security in the Computer Security Group at the Computer Laboratory, where he is supervised by Dr. Ross Anderson. His dissertation examines the application of software engineering techniques to the measurement software security.

During the course of his doctoral degree, Andy interned with the Information Security & Privacy group of Merrill Lynch. He also worked full-time for MIT Lincoln Laboratory, where he collaborated with Dr. Stuart Schechter. They investigated the economic incentives, technical needs, and political challenges that are impeding the deployment of DNS security. In addition, they performed a usability study examining the use of HTTPS in browsers and the impact of design decisions on such usability studies. Andy remained a part-time employee of Lincoln Lab while he finished his doctorate.
